If Archie Comics is adding a gay character, then my dastardly "homosexual agenda" must be working! I've always been a comics fan, but "Archie" always seemed like the safest, most white-bread thing around, so it was never tops on my reading list.
But now, Veronica falls for the new gay guy in Riverdale--Kevin! And he's kinda cute.
You just know some fundies are gonna get their panties all in a tight bunch over this! Read below as Kevin comes out to Jughead.

Day of Silence
No matter how far we think we've come in our society, GLBT students are still bullied and harassed in schools. It happened to me as a kid, and it still happens today. The Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN) is asking bloggers to keep a Day of Silence today to draw attention to this issue. Compared to some GLBT kids, I had it easy in high school, but it still got so bad that I would get physically sick before school and would make excuses to stay home. However, the root problem--homophobia--wasn't actually addressed because I attended a Christian school.
So, no more posts today. Make yourself aware and help where you can. Thanks.

Miley Cyrus' "Party in the USA"--the Gay Version
I know, I know--Miley freakin' Cyrus!? But this song is just so catchy and fun and happy, and it's forever stuck in my head! But I probably wouldn't have heard it if it weren't for this video by some gay guys frolicking in New York's Fire Island Pines. They basically did their own video to Miley's song, and it all just makes me happy. I'm only human! After all, who can resist a Disney teen poplet teamed with cute guys in swim trunks?
Why hasn't Disney tried this combo yet? Pure gold, baby. And to Miss Miley's credit, I do think this one has some talent and staying power. So thank you Fire Island Pines boys--and thank you, Miley. Peace out.

Lady Gaga Wants to Turn the World Gay!
Oh Gaga, how we queers love thee! Let us count the ways!In her OUT magazine interview, Lady Gaga had some prerequisites for rap star Kanye West before agreeing to join his tour (via Towleroad). Says Gaga to Kanye:
"I just want to be clear before we decide to do this together: I’m gay. My music is gay. My show is gay. And I love that it’s gay. And I love my gay fans and they’re all going to be coming to our show. And it’s going to remain gay."
I think Lady Gaga just owned Kanye! This is one lady with a serious "gay agenda!" Me like!

Palin Chooses to be a Narrow-Minded, Self-Righteous Bigot
It seems Gov. Sarah Palin just loves Katie Couric and can't shut up! She keeps giving interviews (finally)! Scrappy Doo didn't do so bad, actually, but she pissed me off when Couric asked her about her views on homosexuality.
Scrappy Doo talked about a friend of hers (gods help the poor woman) who is a lesbian, and here's the zinger that pissed me off:

"She happens to have made a choice that isn’t a choice that I would have made.”
So Scrappy, when did you decide to become a heterosexual? Stupid question, right? But this is what some folks believe, that us gays woke up bored one day and decided to be gay. A "choice" implies the freedom to do one thing or another. I was born gay and have always been gay--even when I chose to date girls and pretend I was heterosexual, even when I had sex with a woman while imagining I was with a guy in order to "keep it up." Or as in Palin's pregnant daughter, who you know didn't have a choice about keeping that baby or marrying the child's father!
What Palin is saying, in effect, is if she were attracted to women, she would repress and deny her sexuality, causing untold emotional and psychological damage to herself. She would lie and pretend, deceiving herself, her family and friends. She would try and marry a man and have a family, plunging several people into a risky arrangement that would likely end in divorce. That would be her choice. That is the kind of twisted individual she is and would like for the rest of us to become!
I did choose, however, to come out and accept myself and stop living someone else's life. Being gay was a gift from the universe; accepting that gift and learning all the good things it offers, that was a choice--a choice I will never regret.

Pagan/Gay Rights Pioneer John Burnside Has Moved On
Here's news of the passing of John Lyon Burnside, gay rights activist and co-founder of the radical faeries, from over at The Wild Hunt.Wow, he was in his 90s and has had such an impact on the GLBT and pagan communities. For me, his legacy is one of joy and play in life, of embracing your otherness as celebrating it, whatever it may be.
I love this crazy picture of Burnside--what a character. We should all be so unafraid.
Thank you, John, for helping me recover my own spirit. I hope that I can carry on that legacy.

Clay Aiken Confirms What Everyone Already Knew
Yep, he's a big ol' queer! Well, finally, he's being honest and coming out on the cover of "People" magazine (which is apparently the way to do it now. First, Ellen DeGerenes, now Clay and I'm sure there have been others).Seems Clay's son inspired him to confirm what everyone has suspected for years. "I cannot raise a child to lie or hide things," he told People.
And that's the way it should be. Coming out isn't about getting attention, it's about honesty and integrity and your own sanity. Now that the cat is out of the bag, I think Clay will be a much happier person.
And I need to collect on a winning bet!!
