"Battlestar Galactica": The End Is Near!

Mostly I thought this episode was beautifully done, especially with the flashbacks for several characters. Nice to see Gaius' dad and Starbuck with Zak. But can anyone explain the scene with a drunk Apollo and the pigeon?? That whooshing sound is the metaphor buzzing over my head. But overall, it seemed to flow well and was quite poetic. Even I'm going to miss that clunky old battlestar!

However--it's obvious the series finale is going to be a collective kamikaze mission to rescue Hera and destroy the Cylon Colony. Which is not so creative, IMHO. It's sad to see Galactica stripped of all her spare parts and everything put in boxes, but I just don't see all the main characters jumping on board the suicide mission.

The admiral? Sure. Starbuck? Sure. But the Final 5? Don't they have some higher destiny? Ok, Hera's important and all but something doesn't ring true. And wait, Apollo is going, too? Isn't he the President of the Colonies?? We see Adama turning back Doc Cottle, saying, "We can't lose another doctor," but not saying anything to his own son who is the frakkin' president? Oh, him? Expendable. Not to mention former prez Roslin, but that seems at least understandable (more great acting by Mary M!). And where the hell were Athena and Helo? Athena's still grieving, so maybe I can understand that, but you'd think Helo would've been in that hangar scene since Hera IS his daughter. Are we supposed to assume he'll be there? Basically, sloppy writing. They needed all the major characters together, so this was the hook.

One other bone to pick. So far, Anders has mumbled jibberish for the last several episodes, but suddenly, with just one question from Adama--he delivers the exact coordinates for the Cylon Colony?! Oh, well, that was convenient! Starbuck spends gods knows how much time trying to figure out those damn musical notes--but, nada. However, Adama steps in, asks his question of the Cylon Eight Ball and, poof, we're off on a suicide mission!

And another thing I don't like--Jamie Bamber's (Apollo) hair is too poofy!

Well, for better or worse, only 2 HOURS LEFT! What will I do with myself on Friday nights!?

And I had to share this last photo, of BSG actresses Grace Park, Tricia Helfer and Katie Sakoff, all dolled up for some GQ magazine photo shoot. Love the glam, girls!

Obama Stands Up for Families and Eases Travel Restrictions to Cuba

Thank heavens these restrictions are finally being rolled back. Back in '04, Bush had instituted a tortuous policy that made it illegal for Cuban-Americans to visit their relatives still living on the island except for ONCE EVERY 3 YEARS. Why? Well, it would bring Fidel Castro to his knees! Yeah, that worked out well.

But Obama has now reversed this policy, which only punished the families. So now Cuban-Americans can make 1 trip to Cuba per year, and they can stay as long as they like once they arrive. They can also visit more distant relatives.

We still have a long way to go with regards to our inhumane policies against Cuba, but this is a great step forward. Gracias, Barack!

I'm SHOCKED!: Bristol Palin and Levi Johnston Split!

Doesn't ANYONE stay together anymore?! No, seriously, you had to be a complete idiot not to see this one coming. Of course, I wished Bristol, the daughter of Republican VP nominee Sarah Palin, all the best with her baby daddy Levi (he IS cute). But I didn't for 1 minute buy the sham story that these 2 would "do the right thing" and get married and live happily ever after just because they were underage parents. But Bristol's mama had to make it a freakin' campaign platform!

Instead of just admitting that these kind of things happen and move on, Caribou Barbie had to turn Bristol into some kind of moral/political statement about unwed mothers--because, you know, these things don't happen in proper, God-fearing Republican families. Yeah, just like Republicans don't have gay children (Dick Cheney!).

I wish all involved the very best. Now, can we STOP with the moralizing?

Eyeborg Can See You!

This is so cool—a guy named Rob Spence who injured one of his eyes in a childhood accident wants to have a mini-camera implanted in his eye socket. Naturally, and possibly ironically, he wants to make a secret documentary, filming people without their knowledge and commenting on how our society is coming to terms with 24/7 surveillance of our lives.

And he calls himself “Eyeborg.” Love the sense of humor. Here’s his blog about the project.

The video is good and gives the basics. Spence got the idea while looking at his cell phone camera and realized the same technology could be placed into a realistic-looking prosthetic eye.

Of course, some will say this is creepy and foretells the end of civilization as we know it! Then again, I always thought the Borg were (was?) cool—so efficient.
